ENGLISH
At Bobby Moore Academy, we believe that all pupils should be exposed to canonical texts or, as Matthew Arnold once put it, 'the best that has been thought and said'. The study of English Literature is founded upon the idea that texts speak to each other, that allusion and intertextuality is vital for pupils' understanding of what they read. With this in mind, pupils will develop their knowledge of literary heritage in the first term and then use this to interpret further texts.
They will study texts in depth, supported by theoretical interpretations, giving pupils an appreciation of how English literature and the English language have shaped the world today. In addition, the department seeks to develop the writing and reading of our pupils, challenging them to be knowledgeable, creative, insightful and inquisitive in all areas.

MATHEMATICS
Our vision for Mathematics at Bobby Moore Academy is straightforward. Every pupil will be a successful mathematician. All pupils will leave Bobby Moore Academy numerate and able to apply their skills in mathematics beyond school. Pupils will have an appreciation of the power and beauty of mathematics to complement their understanding and skills.
We believe that every child can succeed in mathematics consequently, we strive to ensure no ceiling is placed on any pupil’s ability to achieve. Mathematics is a subject to be understood, not just memorised, pupils are taught why things work, not just how. This means that we spend longer on fewer topics each year in order to explore them in depth. Pupils are challenged to build a deep understanding of topics, not just to grasp the surface concepts before they move on.

SCIENCE
Over the course of their five years studying Science at Bobby Moore Academy, pupils will develop their ability to visualise, explain and generalise. In each unit of work, pupils will begin to visualise a Big Idea that underpins a thorough understanding of the topic for any scientist. They will use this Big Idea to answer a series of Big Questions, applying their new knowledge of science to explain everyday phenomena. Later on in the curriculum, they will begin to make observations and measurements, from which they will derive generalised laws that can be applied to more complex situations. The primary aim of this curriculum is to provide pupils with a set of logical tools with which they can understand the world. Further to that, pupils will study episodes in the history of science in order that they might one day take their own place in one of the scientific disciplines.

HISTORY
History at Bobby Moore Academy is a chronological study of the development of Britain from the Anglo-Saxon period onwards. The pupils will begin in Year 7 looking at the Anglo-Saxons and assess the changes brought to England by numerous waves of invaders, including the Norman Conquest. The pupils will consider changes to religion, society and government to form a coherent picture of England in the medieval period. The pupils will study major events in the later medieval period, including the Black Death and the War of the Roses, to consider changes to power in England. In Year 8, pupils will continue with their chronological study of History and cover the turbulent period of Tudor rule, the Renaissance and the threats to the Stuart throne. The pupils will then continue to consider the changing role of the monarchy and power in society through their study of the English Civil War. In Year 9, the historical study will become more global in outlook and examine the role of Britain in the world until the twentieth century.

SPANISH
At The Bobby Moore Academy, students are immersed into Spanish from year 7 through a storytelling curriculum. By the end of year 7 students will have studied 3 novels in Spanish. The novels are an enjoyable primary resource for the students to delve further into new vocabulary, grammar and linguistic structures. Students gain confidence through the literature as well as the development of their reading, listening, writing and speaking skills. Year 8 and year 9 pupils also benefit from a text based curriculum making lessons comprehensible, challenging, relevant and coherent whilst allowing pupils to work above and beyond the requirements of the national curriculum at their age group. Students respond to relevant weekly questions in writing as well as verbally and retain high level structures due to constant revisiting of grammatical themes and vocabulary.

ART & DESIGN
Year 7
Year 7 serves as an effective introduction to the subject of Art & Design – namely, responding to a brief and building confidence in creating a design narrative. Skills are developed across a range of media. Printmaking is introduced as students learn to analyse and respond to the work of Andy Warhol. Graphic communication will introduce Typography and layout. Textiles will introduce a range of techniques and media - a foundation is built that will allow all areas of the subject to be addressed confidently. Pupils progress towards outcomes that demonstrate skills developed.
Year 8
Year 8 will introduce further technical drawing skills as students explore the landscape around them, further developing their confidence in a variety of media. Graphic Communication further explores layout, typography and colour use. Students continue to develop their textiles skills and awareness of approach. All outcomes are the result of a clear design narrative that continues to develop in scope and detail.
Year 9
Year 9 consolidates the techniques, approaches and skills developed across KS3 to ensure confidence in approaching GCSE. Pattern, colour and form are brought to the fore as students respond to the work of Paul Klee. Graphic Communication see students effectively create an identity for a festival, themed around a topic of their choice. Students are also increasingly aware of issues around the media and materials they use, with a focus on sustainability in their Textiles work.
